CHAPTER NINE

Sam held Jackson’s hand until they reached the park, the one by the old bunkers. Jackson hadn’t said much since Sam told him her story, but that was okay with her. She didn’t really want to talk anymore. His hand was warm or at least it was the same temperature as hers. Maybe they were both cold.

The park was empty, and the snow was still falling, but barely. Sam turned her face up to the sky. The snowflakes felt alive, like tiny moth feet touching down on her forehead and cheeks before taking flight again.

“I love the snow,” Sam murmured. “I missed it.”

“Where did you use to live?” Jackson asked.

“Lots of places. Texas. Wyoming. California for a while. We just keep moving.” Sam let go of his hand and walked over to the swing set. Next to the big cement bunkers—those remnants from a past war—the park had a rolling grassy area with a big slide, a swing set, and a merry-go-round.

Sam cleared the dusting of snow off one of the swings and sat down. She didn’t really start swinging, but just kind of swayed back and forth, her toes never leaving the ground. Jackson sat in the swing next to her, not bothering to brush away the snow.

They sat in silence for a little while. From her swing, Sam could see out to the water, though it was hard to tell what was water, and what was just more gathering clouds. It was one of Sam’s favorite places in Grey Hills, though she hadn’t realized it before that moment. On a clear day, when the sun made the water sparkle, Sam felt like she was on the edge of the world.

Sam watched Jackson swing. Well, he didn’t really swing either, but let his feet drag in the bark chips that covered the ground beneath the swing set. His legs were so long.

She had been planning to take Jackson back to the yellow house and show him the journal and the freaky blue light in Dom’s room. Dominick didn’t want Jackson to see it, and Trev was so fucking wishy-washy about the whole thing that Sam wanted to scream. Whatever you guys think is best, Trev kept saying, like he couldn’t possibly have his own opinion. Sam had decided that Dom could go fuck himself and she was just going to go ahead and show Jackson everything. He deserved that much.

But when they got close to the house, Sam couldn’t bear to go inside—not with Dom in there. Sam didn’t know if Dom really still thought that Jackson had something to do with Macy’s death, or if he just needed to hate someone right now and Jackson was the lucky winner. She couldn’t even mention his name without Dom leaving the room. And what if Jackson found out what Dominick had done to Macy’s body?

Sam didn’t really know what Dom would do if they actually took Jackson with them when they left Grey Hills. But how could they leave Jackson behind? That would be like leaving a really big, gangly puppy out in the snow.
